rest in peace

Business Catalyst

R.I.P. B.C.

Adobe have announced that their Business Catalyst (BC) website platform will be closing on 26 March 2021. It’s definitely a shock, but not a surprise – considering how competitive the website platform market is. Adobe are industry leaders for their design and photo editing products, but with so many website platform options and the ever-changing world of websites – it’s probably not as profitable as their Photoshop and InDesign products.

No matter the reason, for you this means that your site will need to be migrated to a new platform before the close date. It also means that BC will no longer be worked on or developed by Adobe, so its’ performance – and your site’s performance – is going to go downhill.

What do you need to do?

1.     Evaluate your current site – Do you like it? Does it need a refresh anyway? Or is the copy, content and overall design layout still working for you?

2.     Take a squizz at the below options – We’ve laid out the pros and cons of the two main platforms we work with, both of which are through organisations dedicated wholly and solely to their website platform product.

3.     Give us a shout – Whether you’re 100% certain on what you want to do and ready to brief us, or you’d like to come in for a chat to discuss the options, when you’re ready – give us a yell and we’ll sit down with you to look at what’s going to suit your business best.

For any questions, queries or general website whinges – call us on 4944 0976 or email us to set up a time to meet and work it all out.

Your site, on Squarespace

Fiona’s favourite option

If you love the style of your site, only need minimal/no copy or image changes, then this option will probably suit you best. Fiona will extract your current site’s code, and use it to create a custom template on the Squarespace platform.

PROS

  • Will mimic the style of your current site.
  • Copy/ Images/ Content can be brought across as is or you can make updates, if you’d like.
  • All site developments/ updates/ upgrades done for you automatically and included in your hosting cost.
  • Fully customisable.
  • Super easy to update.
  • SSL certificate included in hosting at no additional cost (that’s your security cert, to get the s on https – essential for your Google ranking on mobile devices).

CONS

  1. Your hosting has to go through Squarespace (costs here) – a standard site with no ecommerce is $300/yr.
  2. The template will be set up especially for your current design – so fonts/menu colours and the general style/layout will be coded into the site, and not easily changed.

New Wordpress Site

Miki’s favourite option

There's no limit when it comes to what you can do with Wordpress - for reals. From effective long-form landing pages, to multiple blog systems, to extensive ecommerce sites, if you can dream it, we can code it and build it on Wordpress.

PROS

  • You can use any hosting provider you like.
  • Fully customisable – we're not kidding. You want an animated dinosaur shooting lava from its mouth with your homepage appearing from the steam? We can do that. I mean, it will take some time (and coffee), but it’s doable.
  • So. Many. Plugin. Possibilities.

CONS

  1. You have to be on top of checking updates, for everything. Really good plugins are updated regularly by the developers, so if you don’t check them, parts of your website can break. It can be easy fix, but it does require proactive checking.
  2. If you need to add in new pages, this can be tricky for non-tech savvy people.
  3. There are additional costs for SSL certificate (that’s your security cert, to get the s on https – essential for your Google ranking on mobile devices).
  4. You have to build a new site.

The cost

Each site is different – how many pages you have, what the functionality is and so on – so there is no blanket price for any option. When we catch up to talk about your site, we can discuss the options, look at your current site and get a full brief from you on what you want to do. Then, we’ll do a quote that details our proposal and all the costs involved.

The great debate

SquareSpace vs Wordpress

Chances are, if you are reading this page then you probably don’t build sites every day like we do – so we can totally understand if it’s really hard to make a decision on which platform to move to. We highly recommend also doing your own research, plus coming in to talk to us for any questions, but in the meantime – this might help.
